Volunteer Opportunities

The following are current volunteer opportunities for the Friends of Abused Families, Inc.:

Sexual Assault Victim Advocate

The Sexual Assault Victim Advocate provides after hour support and advocacy for victims of sexual assault at Washington County hospitals. The volunteer will be on call for one week on a rotating monthly schedule. The volunteer will be on call from 4:30pm through 8:30am during the work week and 24 hours a day on Saturday and Sunday. Patience, sensitivity, and the ability to listen are critical elements of this role. Transportation and a 30-minute response time to the hospital are necessary. All communications, observations and information made by, between, or about clients is to remain confidential.

Childcare Volunteer

The primary goal of the childcare team is to provide attention and nurturing to children who are too young for the art therapy program. Volunteers will teach protective behaviors and focus on building their self-esteem. Helping children understand they are special and respected is an important element to the care provided. Most importantly volunteers facilitate a safe, fun environment for children. This allows time for the children to just enjoy being young. Currently, volunteers are needed on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm .

Office / Clerical Volunteer

The primary role is to assist with and complete various office or clerical projects as assigned by Friends’ staff. Projects may include but are not limited to filing, computer work, mailings, making copies, processing thank you notes, accepting and organizing in-kind donations, and organization and maintenance of Friends resource library.

Facility / Maintenance Volunteer

The primary role will be to assist with and complete maintenance and facility related projects as assigned by Friends’ staff. Projects may include but are not limited to mowing the law, landscape work, painting, changing light bulbs, and cleaning carpets, windows, and base boards.

Grocery Shopper

The primary role will be to assist with purchasing groceries and supplies for the shelter clients. This is an as needed position and is generally once a week.
