Revealing Pearls of Hope ~ 30 Years of Friends
On September 12, 2008, 209 individuals gathered to celebrate Friends 30 Year Anniversary. What started in 1978 as a small group of volunteers with annual budget of $5,000 has grown to a team of dedicated volunteers and staff providing 24/7 emergency shelter and crisis intervention for Washington County. The annual budget is now over $500,000 and continues to grow as the needs within the community grow and services are accessed more than ever before.
The following piece was written to commemorate Friends of Abused Families 30 Year Anniversary and shared at our Revealing Pearls of Hope – 30 Years of Friends Celebration.
On Our 30th Anniversary
Tonight, as we gather
We celebrate 30 years of caring,
30 years of helping,
and 30 years of working as a community
to support and encourage those in need.
Over the years, we’ve accomplished a great deal
in the years ahead, we have much more to do
Sadly, domestic and sexual violence
continue to plague our community and many others.
Tonight, as we gather,
We say “thank you” to the many
who have volunteered, who have served,
and who have given their time and treasure
to this noble and necessary mission.
Without your help, thousands in need
would have been forced to “go it alone,”
often with unhappy and sometimes tragic results
Friends of Abused Families is in many ways, a pearl.
From its rough and difficult beginning,
it has grown to be a critical community resource,
a jewel that is beautiful in shape
and solid in its commitment to support and encourage
those who need our help.
In similar fashion, that pearl symbolizes our goal
for each and every client.
Providing guidance and support,
we want to free them from their rough, undeserved past,
and help them to become strong, solid, empowered individuals
thereby strengthening our community as a whole.
Tonight, as we begin this celebration, I ask each of you to
rededicate yourself to helping others.
This group, individually and collectively,
must continue their fight help those affected by violence,
Whenever and wherever necessary
For how long you ask?
MY Response –
For as long as it takes to keep families and individuals safe
because they deserve nothing less.
