Equality Wheel

The equality wheel diagram (below) shows equality at the center of the healthy relationship. When both people in a relationship believe they are equal, and neither tried to gain power and control over the other, the result is a non-violent and healthy relationship. There are examples provided below of behaviors that go on in a relationship based on equality.

** In the following descriptions the victim is referred to as a female. However victims can be male and female and the verbiage below should not stop anyone from seeking services. **

Negotiation & Fairness

  • Seeking mutually satisfying resolutions to conflict
  • Accepting change
  • Being willing to compromise

Non-Threatening Behavior

  • Talking and acting so that she feels safe and comfortable expressing herself and doing things

Respect

  • Listening to her non-judgmentally
  • Being emotionally affirming and understanding
  • Valuing Opinions

Trust and Support

  • Supporting her goals in life
  • Respecting her right to her own feelings, friends, activities, and opinions

Honest and Accountability

  • Accepting responsibility for self
  • Acknowledging past use of violence
  • Admitting being wrong
  • Communicating openly and truthfully

Responsible Parenting

  • Sharing parental responsibilities
  • Being a positive non-violent role model for the children

Shared Responsibility

  • Mutually agreeing on a fair distribution of work
  • Making family decisions together

Economic Partnership

  • Making money decisions together
  • Making sure both partners benefit from financial agreements
